Adairs Buch A History of the Amerikan Indians wurde im Jahre 1775 veröffentlicht. Zitate und Inhalte aus diesem Buch finden sich in anderen Büchern des 19. Jahrhunderts wieder, so auch im Buch Mormon.

Auf Seite 377-378 dieses Buches finden wir Ausdrücke, die auch im Buch Mormon wiedergefunden werden. Da eine genaue Anlehnung nur in der Originalsprache möglich ist, soll hier in Englisch zitiert werden:

"Through the whole continent, and in the remotest woods, are traces of their ancient warlike disposition. We frequently met with great mounds of earth, either of a circular, or oblong form, having a strong breast-work at a distance around them, made of the clay which had been dug up in forming the ditch on the inner side of the inclosed ground, and these were their forts of security against an enemy... About 12 miles from the upper northern parts of the Choktah country, there stand... two oblong mounds of earth... in an equal direction with each other... A broad deep ditch inclosed those two fortresses, and there they raised an high breast-work, to secure their houses from the invading enemy."

Im Buch Mormon - Alma 48,49,50,53 - finden wir einige verblüffende Parallelen:

"Yea, he had been strengthening the armies of the Nephites, and erecting small forts, or places of resort; throwing up banks of earth round about to enclose his armies ... the Nephites were taught ... never to raise the sword except it were against an enemy... they had cast up dirt round to shield them from the arrows... the chief captains of the Lamanites were astonished exceedingly, because of the wisdom of the Nephites in preparing their places of security.... they knew not that Moroni had fortified, or had built forts of security in all the land round about... the Lamanites could not get into their forts of security.... because of the highness of the bank which had been thrown up, and the depth of the ditch which had been dug round about... they [the Lamanites] began to dig down their banks of earth... that they might have an equal chance to fight... instead of filling up their ditches by pulling down the banks of earth, they were filled up in a measure with their dead... And [Moroni] caused them to erect fortifications that they might secure their armies... Teancum... caused that they should commence laboring in digging a ditch round about the land... And he caused that they should build a breastwork of timbers upon the inner bank of the ditch; and they did cast up dirt out of the ditch against the breastwork of timbers..." ¹

Interessant sind die Ausdrücke „their forts of security“ und „forts of security“ (Befestigungen, Alma 49:13,18). Diese Ausdrücke kommen im Buch Mormon jeweils nur ein einziges Mal vor und nie in der Bibel. Auch das Wort „breastwork“ (Brustwehr, Alma 53:4) kommt im Buch Mormon nur drei Mal vor und nie in der Bibel. Außer in Alma nur noch in Mosia 11:11 aber ohne militärischen Zusammenhang.

Die Wortkombination „which had been dug“ (Alma 49:18) findet sich auch nur ein einziges mal im Buch Mormon wieder und nie in der Bibel. Weiter das Worte „the ditch“ (Graben, Alma 53:3,4). Diese kommen drei Mal in Zusammenhang mit den nephitischen Befestigungen im Alma vor und sonst nirgends mehr. Genauso die Wörter „the inner“ ( Alma 53:4) in Zusammenhang mit „ditch“.

Weitere Parallelen werden bei den Ausdrücken „secure their“, „an equal“, „against an enemy“ und „mounds of earth“, bzw. „banks of earth“ gefunden.

Ist es Zufall, dass all diese Worte und Ausdrücke in militärischem Zusammenhang in Adairs Buch und im Buch Alma erscheinen und sonst nirgendwo?

Ebenso könnte die Idee der Messingplatten, die aus Jerusalem mitgebracht wurden, aus Adairs Buch stammen. Wir lesen auf Seite 178 - 179:

„ In den Tuccabatches.. gibt es zwei Platten aus Messing und fünf aus Kupfer. Sie erachten diese als so heilig, dass sie diese in ihrem Allerheiligsten beständig aufbewahren... Old Bracket, ein Indianer.. beschrieb diese folgendermaßen: ... Die Größe der beiden Messingplatten.. betrug etwa anderthalb Fuß im Durchmesser.
Er sagte, dass ihm von seinen Vätern gesagt wurde, dass sie diese Platten von einem Menschen erhalten hatten, den sie Gott nannten; und dass es viele mit anderen Größen gab... und einige hatten Inschriften und wurden mit bestimmten Menschen beerdigt... “

Weiter finden wir bei Adair den Ausdruck „for the space of three days and nights..“ und im Alma 36:10 „for the space of three days and three nights“. Joseph Smith verwendete das Wort „Monat“ oder „Monate“ sechzehn Mal im Buch Mormon aber bei einer Gelegenheit das Wort „Monde“. So steht in Omni 1:21: „..for the space of nine moons.“ Auf Seite 125 in Adairs Buch heißt es: „.. for the space of four moons...“.

Sicher lässt sich hierüber streiten aber sind dies wirklich nur Zufälle?
